Barco Projection Systems, based in Belgium, will use Texas Instrumentís Digital Light ProcessingÆ (DLPÆ) technology to develop a line of high brightness projectors. The projectors will be introduced in 1999. At the heart of DLP technology is an optical semiconductor chip that has an array of hinged, microscopic mirrors mounted on a standard logic device. These mirrors operate as optical switches to create a high resolution, full color image. George Lucas and Twentieth Century Fox will use a TI-developed projector in special digital projections of ""Star Wars: Episode I ñ The Phantom Menace beginning June 18 for a one-month period in two venues, one in Los Angels, the other in New York.
