Meridian M33 Active Loudspeaker Now Shipping To Dealers

10-Jun-99

Meridian, long considered the foremost active loudspeaker authority, initially introduced their M33 loudspeaker in late 1998, but a long series of supplier disasters - including the total devastation of the paint factory that manufactured the speakerís gloss black finish - conspired to keep it from reaching Meridian dealers, Now that Meridian has almost eliminated its backorder logjam, perhaps it's time to re-examine the remarkable M33. M33 Background Meridian has a distinguished history of building highly acclaimed active loudspeakers, dating back to the 1977 launch of its first product, the M1. Meridianís award-winning active loudspeaker designs combine excellent acoustic and drive-unit technology with multiple built-in power amps and high-precision audiophile active crossover networks. Meridianís small actives, such as the M20 and M30, combine immediacy and superb imaging with incredible bass. The M33 is the latest in that tradition. M33 Active Loudspeaker The M33 is a small enclosure two-way active loudspeaker that can be mounted on stands or on a bookshelf. It is also suitable for wall mounting using Omnimount fittings. It can be positioned vertically or horizontally, making it an ideal center as well as a main or surround speaker. For home theatre use, it can be matched with any of the other Meridian active or DSP speakers. It mates superbly with one or more M2500 or M1500 subwoofer systems. The M33's precision cast-aluminum enclosure's innate stiffness and rigidity, combined with built-in damping and reinforcement, ensures, says the company, remarkably low levels of cabinet resonance and, as a result, exceptionally low coloration. This is said to give the speaker remarkable mid-range transparency. Two 5.25-inch large-magnet, long-throw, carbon-fiber woofers, aided by Meridian's active bass technology, provide surprisingly rich, deep bass. A neodymium magnet controls the high quality 1-inch fabric dome tweeter. The drivers are fully shielded and are mounted to a high-density molded baffle. As with all Meridian active speakers, the built-in rear-mounted electronics are housed in their own enclosure, completely separate from the acoustic section. Electronic System The M33's active crossover utilizes high-quality, small-signal audiophile components. Meridian's active bass alignment is claimed to extend the compact speaker's bass response without reducing its efficiency. The system is phase corrected to provide precise imaging over a wide listening area, whether the speaker is used in vertical or center channel position. Two 55W low-feedback power amplifiers drive each M33. The says that the combination of exacting magnetic design and very fast output devices results in extremely low noise, high detail and fast bass. A hefty toroidal transformer and high quality audiophile-grade capacitors power the complete electronic assembly. The manufactureís suggested retail price is $2,495 a pair in gloss black finish.
