Two More Surround EX Titles Announced For Theatrical Release

Dolby Laboratories announced in their June 1999 theatrical digital release update two additional titles scheduled to be mixed with DolbyÆ Digital Surround EX encoding. The titles are ""The Fight Club"" due in August from 20th Century Fox and ""The House On Haunted Hill"" due in October from Warner Bros. This brings the total number of Surround EX titles to seven. The other five titles are ""Star Wars: Episode I ñ The Phantom Menace"" (Lucasfilm Ltd./20th Century Fox, released May 19), ""Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"" (New Line, released June 11), ""The Haunting"" (DreamWorks, due in July), ""Toy Story 2"" (Pixar/Walt Disney, due in November) and ""Minority Report"" (DreamWorks/20th Century Fox, due in 2000). Another film, ""Memoirs Of A Geisha,"" was previously announced as an EX-encoded film but the planned production, to be directed by Steven Spielberg, has been postponed indefinitely with Spielberg instead preparing ""Minority Report."" Additional titles will continue to be announced along with an expected increase in the number of theatres equipped to decode EX-encoded soundtracks. Since the extra ""Center-Back"" surround channel is encoded into a filmís original mix and carried over to the printmaster, the format is compatible with all theatrical digital systems. Additionally, the encoded material will carry over to the consumer DVD and LaserDisc editions when time comes for their release, so home theatre enthusuiasts will merely need to add a decoder for Surround EX playback in the home.
