Macrovision Signs Multi Year DVD Copy Protection Agreement With Le Studio Canal Plus

Macrovision UK Ltd, a subsidiary of Macrovision Corporation of Sunnyvale, California (Nasdaq: MVSN) announced today that Studio Canal Plus has signed an agreement to copy protect 100 percent of its Home Video DVD (digital versatile disc) titles. ""In order to combat piracy, le Studio Canal Plus has entered into an agreement with Macrovision for the application of its Copy Protection system across the whole of its DVD production,"" said Manuel Chiche, Head of Video Department. Macrovision's DVD copy protection is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of DVD programming to VCRs without impacting the original picture. It is now used on most DVDs being released and is the only technology of its kind that is currently available to protect against unauthorized copying from DVD players to videocassette recorders. ""We are pleased that Studio Canal Plus, an existing VHS Anti-Copy Process user, has also chosen to use Macrovision Copy Protection on its DVD releases,"" said Angelina Santoliquido, Director, Sales and Marketing. ""This will help to maximize their DVD sales and simultaneously protect their VHS revenues by combating consumer copying onto the VHS format, as well as ensuring their reputation for producing high quality films is maintained."" Macrovision is best known for the videocassette version of its copy protection technology, which is used by every Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) studio on some or all of their videocassette releases. Over 2.5 billion videocassettes have been copy protected. In the U.S., over 1,500 corporate, educational, and special interest rights owners apply the copy protection technology to their packaged media. DVD copy protection was introduced in 1997 and has been utilized on over 75 percent of all DVDs (i.e., over 85 million DVDs) produced to-date.
