Institute Works To Improve DVDs

The Institute of Microelectronics of Singapore (www.ime.org.sg) is developing a system based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technology to improve the yield and quality in the production of DVDs. Part of the institute's ongoing research and development efforts, TEM technology is similar to the one used by semiconductor devices. Using TEM enables the identification of bonding faults and material impurities and the evaluation of metal coverage and layer interfaces. The institute has recently signed an agreement with 11 multinational companies, forming a consortium to research and develop technologies for the packaging of next-generation integrated circuits.
