Y
In S-Video, "Y" is an abbreviation for luminance of a color video signal. ("C" is for chrominance.)
Y Signal
The luminance signal transmitted in standard color video. In a color picture the Y signal is made up of 0.30 red, 0.59 green and 0.11 blue. It is compatible with a standard monochrome receiver.
Y-Axis
The relative amplitude in the specification of picture resolution. See X-Axis and Luminance Picture Resolution.
Y/C
Broadcast NTSC with separate color. Y = luminance & C = chrominance. The Y/C (or S-Video) cable is terminated at each end with a four-pin DIN connector. Although it may appear to be a single cable, internally it has two 75 ohm coax or twisted pair cables to carry the separate Y and C signals.
